Understanding Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery
Traditionally, surgical procedures required an overnight hospital stay for recovery. However, today, there are alternatives available to you determined by your diagnosis and the type of surgery you need.
What is inpatient surgery?
Inpatient surgery is defined as a surgical procedure where you are required to stay at least one night in the hospital. With inpatient surgeries, hospital staff can monitor and observe patients during their recovery and provide immediate medical attention if it is needed.
What is outpatient surgery?
With outpatient surgeries, you can go home the same day as your surgical procedure, if you meet certain criteria. There are many benefits to outpatient surgeries, such as reduced costs, stress, and time away from work and the things you love.
Outpatient surgery may also be referred to as:
- Ambulatory surgery
- In-and-out surgery
- Same-day surgery
