Understanding Common COVID-19 Terms

Social Distancing

  • Do not shake hands
  • Avoid crowds
  • Maintain 6 feet of distance
  • Stay home if you are sick

Self Monitoring & Self-Quarantining

  • Aims to keep people who were exposed or who may have been exposed away from others
  • Regularly check temperature
  • Watch for signs of respiratory illness
  • Limit interactions
  • Lasts 14 days (symptoms may appear sooner)

Isolation

  • Triggered by a COVID-19 diagnosis
  • Can happen whether you are sick at home or in the hospital
  • More rigid infectious disease precautions, such as wearing masks, should be taken

Quarantine

  • Individuals or groups are on lock-down
  • Mandated by state or federal law
