Fisher-Titus Nationally Recognized as Best Maternity Care Hospital For Fourth Year

Maternity Department Staff

(June 9, 2023, Norwalk) – Fisher-Titus has been awarded Newsweek’s America’s Best Maternity Hospitals again for 2023 – only one of 384 winners recognized nationally. This is the fourth year in a row the maternity department has received this recognition and is the only facility in the region to receive this designation.

“We are thrilled that the Maternity Department has been recognized among America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2023 by Newsweek, putting Fisher-Titus labor and delivery services among the ranks of medical centers like Duke and Johns Hopkins,” explained James D. Kasten, MD, FACOG, Chief of Obstetrics. “This award acknowledges the outstanding service and care our Maternity Department offers, especially related to our high patient satisfaction scores and the quality of care in avoiding unnecessary procedures like episiotomies and c-sections with rates 3 times lower than the national average.”

“The Newsweek ranking system is a really good measure for families and physicians, too. It's based on our patients' feedback, and our performance on important quality and safety measures. Our ranking places us in the top 400 birthing centers in the entire country, which is rare for an independent community hospital to achieve. As a pediatrician and a mom, I'm extremely proud to be a part of Fisher-Titus,” states Karen La Salle, MD, FAAP, Chief of Pediatrics.

Newsweek, along with Statista, the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider, developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Three data sources were used for the evaluation:

Newsweek Best Maternity Care 2023

  • Nationwide online survey: hospital managers and healthcare professionals with knowledge about maternity processes including midwives, neonatal and OB/GYNs were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.
  • Medical key predictive indexes on hospitals with a focus on indicators relevant to maternity care including rates of Cesarean births
  • Results from patient satisfaction surveys

“It is an honor to receive this award for the fourth year in a row and it is a true testament to the high-quality prenatal, labor and delivery, and post-partum care our Birthing Center provides. We know this is crucial to the long-term health and wellbeing for our mothers and babies,” said Brent Burkey, MD, president and CEO of Fisher-Titus. “It’s important that we provide the best care and experiences for our mothers and babies born at Fisher-Titus to ensure a strong start to life.”

“We have an amazing Maternity Department here at Fisher-Titus, from prenatal to post-partum, our staff continues to provide exceptional care. They provide services like baby bootcamp, a lactation support group, and child/infant CRP, which all help in preparation for the new addition to their family,” explained Katie Chieda, Chief of Nursing. “We have many talented nurses, physicians, and supporting roles that make our Maternity department special.”

La Salle continued by saying, “We have a lot of great things happening here for parents and babies every day. We have dedicated lactation and nursing support before, during, and after birthing. We have the resources to help families get a healthy start, helping ensure you have what you need, including ways to feed, transport, and create a safe place for your baby to sleep. We are focused on providing care to the entire family and keeping parents and babies together in in a way that works best for each family group.”

“Newsweek has recognized the department 4 years in a row. The competent and compassionate care that FTMC delivers is exactly what every family member would want for their sister, wife, or daughter,” said Kasten.
